I heard you're running a Kickstarter! ... What is a Kickstarter?

Posted by Annabelle Collins on

Hey guys!

As I'm sure you will have heard, Monday night we launched our Kickstarter! The Kickstarter has been a huge success and 4 days in is 500% funded, but I've had a number of people ask me what a Kickstarter is so I thought I would break it down for you.

What is Kickstarter?

Kickstarter is a crowdfunding platform, where small businesses and creators (and sometimes even large businesses) can go to the community for funding for their project. The way this works is that the creator (i.e. me) writes about their project, what they've done, their future plans, what they need money etc. The community can then decide to pledge money to the project to see it happen.

Pledging

There are two ways to pledge - you can pledge with reward or without.

Pledging without a reward is simple, people in the community can donate money to the project simply because they think it is awesome and they want it to succeed. These can be friends, family or other generous spirited people who love seeing small businesses grow and succeed and are willing to donate a few pounds (or dollars) to help see it happen.

Pledging with reward is when someone pledges an amount of money to buy the product at a discounted rate. In this sense it acts like pre-ordering online. Someone can go onto the Kickstarter page, view the rewards available and pledge money of the same price or higher for the reward that they want. They are also able to add items onto their pledge through adding the monetary value of items in the 'add on' table. In this sense it acts almost like adding pieces to your shopping basket.

Stretch Goals

As the project grows, Stretch Goals are announced and unlocked. These are extra items or packs available to purchase as add-ons or extra rewards that have been requested by the community. Our most recent add on is larger floor pieces, for example 4x4, 4x5 and 5x5 tiles. Once that funding goal has been reached the stretch goals are unlocked and a new goal with new products is announced. It keeps things fresh and exciting!

Do I need a Kickstarter Account to pledge money?

No! Making a Kickstarter account takes minutes at most but the great thing is that you can make a pledge without making one.

Running a Kickstarter has been amazing fun. It's a great way to be able to connect with your online community and to work together towards progressing the project.

If you are one of my backers then I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart - what you guys have done is amazing and I can't wait to see where we take this terrain next!

As always, stay safe, look after each other and keep adventuring!

Annabelle
